Making art is often compared to creating life or giving birth. The idea that making art requires only a catastrophic, lightning strike of genius, is one that I contest. Through Nurture I would like to explore the connection between practicing one’s art and the act of nurturing a child, rather than the momentary (relatively) act of giving birth. To nurture another being, or care for and encourage development over time, is an activity filled with intense work and concentration, as well as periods of euphoric joy and satisfaction. To develop artistic potential, one must nurture the thoughts and skills needed to create art. Invited artists will submit a piece they feel addresses this concept. Work may be related to the activity surrounding nurturing the art practice, or to parallels they have found between the cultivation of art and that of nurturing another living being.
